Trust Your Gut

….it’s never wrong. When I was a teen and into my twenties, I often ignored my intuition and empathetic nature. But, back then, I had no idea what was hitting me, I just knew what I knew. I knew my gut was always right. It is that sweet spot inside that never wavers regardless of outer conditions. It’s also known as True North, a kick-ass  navigation system we have as a beacon on our inner road map. Each of us has our own unique path. We often have a dialogue between ourselves – the human, ego-based ‘us’, and our true selves, our soul essence. But, do we check in often enough for answers, or unfiltered direction? We are so perfectly adept at glorifying the business of being busy and, some, rarely slow down enough to ask.

So, what exactly does living intuitively or trusting your gut mean? Sounds woo-woo! But it’s really one of our most basic instincts. What I have found is that all we ever are truly experiencing is the exchange of energy and perception; our own and that of others.  There are plenty of pesky human-isms that trick us into thinking we are ‘less than’ or ‘better than’; our ego as well as dogma and inherited thought patterns, just to name a few. The ego isn’t inherently negative, it is only negative when we are negative – think of a coin with two sides- an ego portrayed positively might be called self-care. In a society that values sameness and fitting in, it can be awkwardly uncomfortable to stand apart and be individualized. I’ve wondered, how can we, realistically, remain in tune when we’re too busy dodging hatred, criticism, and judgment from all sides, or, worse, participating in it? It’s the living-in-between the two realms that often make this a big messy sandbox of human existence.

When we are truly tuning into ourselves, there are no wrong answers. It’s usually the first step on the map toward our highest potential. Once you get the hang of it, it brings profound inner peace as it allows us the freedom to live consciously, awake and aware even when it sucks, especially when it sucks; because we are so good at succumbing to numbing. To me, our job here is not to fit in, or to be right or wrong;  it is to reveal and use our gifts – our light, so that we can do the work and share what we came here to share.

So, want to try an easy way to start living intuitively? The next time you find yourself opening the fridge – Stop. Close it and sit quietly. Become aware of your body. Feel your heart beating. Imagine other organs working very hard keeping you alive. Imagine what it must be like to be a body. Then ask your body ‘What exactly needs to be nourished?’  There will be an answer and it most likely won’t be what you might have tossed in your mouth, or eaten over the sink.

Try it, then let me know!

With Love,

Susan
